Chapter 7

Varik still looked a little pale, and if that wasn’t enough evidence to prove he needed to feed, then his foul temper was.

“If you’re not getting any bites online, ask Penny if anyone around here has a criminal record.” I stepped back when he snapped his teeth at me.

“I already have,” he snarled. I did not appreciate the fierce look he gave me, but I would let it slide.

“Varik, my ex-boyfriend was such an arsehole, and he only lives up the road,” Penny said, then she smirked without taking her eyes off her laptop.

“Which road?” he queried.

“Penny, I don’t think you would really want your ex killed,” David replied.

“Wouldn’t I? He’s the local thug. Of all the crimes he’s committed, he’s not once been charged. Some people just know how to play the system, I guess.” She spoke without a care in the world.

I was really starting to like her. Although, it wasn’t lost on me that she, too, could play the system. The difference was that she wasn’t doing this for herself or greed; as she had said before, it didn’t pay the bills.

“What crimes has he committed?” David asked.

“It doesn’t matter,” I said. “Varik needs to feed.” He came first, not some local thug, I wanted to say.

“Not like that, poppet.” He looked at Penny, “There’s a website that logs all the child sex offenders and rapists living in your local area.”

“Yeah, there is, but only the police can access it,” I reminded him.

Penny whipped around and pulled a different laptop from a shelf above the radios. It looked like a homemade one to me. I glanced around her home again, then I finally understood why she kept all those broken appliances. She pulled a hairband from her wrist, scraped her long auburn hair into a ponytail and concentrated on her new task. It sounded like torrential rain as she pounded the keyboard. I looked from David to Varik. They both appeared smug.

“What?” I frowned at them. Then it dawned on me. “Can she?”

“She’ll find it.” David looked at Penny with pride.

Yeah, I could see why she had been chosen now, and it wasn’t just because she could handle the supernatural. She was an absolute asset.

Penny found what she was looking for in eight minutes. Eight!

“That’s amazing … I meant that you found the website so fast, not …” That there were so many names and addresses in her local area, which Varik had to write down quickly so she could disconnect from the database. No, that part was depressing.

“Yeah, wish I had done it sooner. It’s fair to say that I won’t be serving these monsters at the pub from now on.” She looked as angry as I felt when I first realised how many predators were out there and living so close.

“Penny, with Varik here, you won’t have to worry about them walking into your pub anytime soon,” David said simply. “Poppet, I’m going to wait with Bowen. You three stay here and listen out for anything out of the ordinary.
